Press
Journalists receive hundreds of press releases every day, so
stories need to stand-out to make it into the paper.
Before approaching the media think about:
- why the newspaper or magazine would be interested in running
your story
- what makes your story unique
- why would their readers want to know about your fundraising
efforts for The Prince’s Trust
Writing a press release
If you are writing a press release for your fundraising event,
be sure to refer to the event as
[Event Name] – raising funds to support The Prince’s
Trust
It is not
The Prince’s Trust’s [Event Name]
Please also remember to include the below information about The
Prince’s Trust in your press release. This will help us to raise
vital awareness of our work:
- The Prince’s Trust helps more than 40,000 disadvantaged young
people each year, giving them the confidence and skills to get a
job
- More than three in four young people on Prince’s Trust schemes
move into work, training or education
- Just £3 a month can help turn around a young life
Who to contact
Here are some ideas of who you may like to contact:
- The newspaper local to where you live
- The newspaper local to your place of work
- Your local radio station
- Your company’s internal and external magazines
- Your company’s website and intranet
Unless you have existing contacts at these publications, the
best person to ask for is the News Editor.
Photographs and photo-shoots
If staging a photo-shoot, ask the local paper to send a
photographer. Always have a good quality, high resolution digital
camera handy to take a picture and send it off to the local paper
if a photographer doesn’t turn up. Local papers are desperate for
interesting stories – make copy as media friendly as possible.
Speaking about The Prince’s Trust
Please remember that you are not a spokesperson for The Prince’s
Trust or HRH The Prince of Wales and therefore should not talk
about our work when dealing with the media, other than using the
written words as outlined in the press release.
If you are asked any questions about The Prince’s Trust or The
Prince of Wales please refer them to The Trust’s National Press
Office via 020 7543 7314.
